A reproduction of a Map of the NORTH CAROLINA - by John Collet published in 1768.
Collet's map of North Carolina is one of the rarest and most important of all maps of the region.
The map covers all of North Carolina westward to Table [Rock] Mountain in the Blue Ridge Mountains, near the present site of Morganton. Collet's map greatly surpassed in accuracy and scope any prior map of the region and records the great westward movement of population up to and across Piedmont during the middle of the 18th Century.
Collet's map became the source map for all maps of North Carolina for the next 40 years, until the issuance of the Price-Strother map in 1808. The Granville District shown on Collet's map is based upon surveys and information gathered by the Granville District Surveyor, William Churton. Many of the soundings off the coast were also probably supplied by Churton.
Collet's map includes an unusual amount of topographical detail. Henry Mouzon relied upon the map almost exclusively for his map of the Carolinas. Several important sites are highlighted on the map including New Bern, the site of the new capital, and the Gov. H[ouse] Bellefont at Brunswick-town. The map is based upon a manuscript by Collet, drawn in 1768.
Born in Switzerland, Collet came to America in 1767 to serve as governor of Fort Johnston near Wilmington.
